There’s a scene where a hundred-plus year old vampire teacher berates a good student for writing a great essay, saying “F stands for fun. My fun.” That scene really speaks to me. Otherwise Freaks of Nature is little more than a run-of-the-mill spoof offering nothing in the way of meaning and only occasionally solid comedy. It could have been far worse, but my expectations for a film where the plot description mentions high school, vampires, zombies, and aliens, all in the same sentence, were pretty low. What surprised me about Freaks of Nature was its very existence. Made in 2015? I’d never heard of it and it stars Keegan-Michael Key, Joan Cusack, Patton Oswalt, and Denis Leary. Am I that out of touch with the film world or is this another example of the kind of film that gets made that nobody cares about. Not the writer, not the director, not the producers because it’s so cheap, nobody. Someone tweet at Vanessa Hudgens and ask if she gives two shits about Freaks of Nature. If she says, “Of course,” then I’m wrong. If she says, “no,” then I’m right. My money's on her saying, “Which movie are you talking about exactly?”
