Short and beautiful, The Secret of the Kells is clearly inspired by story books as evident in its artistic style and chosen narrative. At first I was a little put off but the strange 2D animations, but I grew to appreciate them over time, as, if nothing else, unique to cinema. The plot revolves around an Irish fable about a thousand-year-old artifact called the Book of Kells, that is so far culturally removed from my modern life I found it hard to be engrossed by it. I did manage to grab onto pieces though. I love the sprightly woodland girl Aisling, who has a song about two-thirds of the way through that is easily my favorite part. This film is for the few willing to embrace challenges of something distinctly different or for those who want to see animation done in a non computer-gen style. Nobody's doing that better than Pixar anyway, right?
